Update: Shopping.com API module for Drupal

Some years back I had a module made to use Shopping.com's API, unfortunately the module never made it to Drupal.org nor has been updated for the newer versions of Drupal. I blogged about this shopping comparison drupal module several weeks back.

I spent some time tonight upgrading this shopping comparison module and I am one step (out of many more to come) closer to converting this module to Drupal 5. There are tons of small bugs that need to be removed as well as code rewrite.

This is somewhat good timing to review this module. As Shopping.com is going to modify their API in the coming months, and it seems everyone will have to update thier code within a year's time, the old API won't be supported. Since I have a few sites running off this codebase, I should have them updated to Drupal 5/6 once this module has been upgraded. I can't tell you how happy I will be about that!

As I make progress I will post the details...

@moszaa, I thought you might be interested in joining the Shopping.com API LinkedIn group and read up on new posts related to the API. I have moved the related blog posts to the Shopping.com API page

@moszaa, I wouldn't really call it a script. If you aren't familiar with Drupal I would get acquainted with the software first. By time you do that the shopping comparison module might be done.

Hi Elvis...

First: Sorry for my english :-)

1. Can you say for which countries of shopping.com you can use your api module for drupal in the new version?

2. When will shopping.com change to the new api? Do you have any informations?

3. Can i buy the module or is it a free download with revenue sharing?

i hope you can answer my questions and i wish you a nice day...

@Oli, I wanted to invite you to new posts related to the Shopping.com API. Some exciting things are taking place in the coming months.

Hi Oli, the module will support all 5 countries (USA, GB, FR, DE, AU). We are being told the API will change the 3rd qtr this year and the old api will be around for 1 extra year. The shopping.com api module will be free - with our revenue program. The revenue program has not been decided just yet.

Thanks for your interest.

Hi, I'm really interested in using your Comparison Shopping work. Have you developed it any farther?

Hi Wayman, yes I am working on it sporidically. I am too the point now where the Drupal module can be published. I wanted others to do some testing of it first before uploading the module to Drupal.

There are still lots of things that need to be done though. For example, each shopping.com item / product needs to be a drupal node, to take advantage of attaching comments / reviews/ votes / ratings etc to products. Join us over at linkedin for conversations about this module with other shopping.com api users.

I'm in a niche that isn't well represented on shopping.com though. Or any other big comparison shopping sites. That's one of the reasons I'm eager to start it up. Will I be able to input my own scraped data?

@Wayman, do you mean can you seperate shopping.com content from yours? Yes, you can. With Drupal you can create different content types, like blog, news, products, scrapped content etc. If the content you are scrapping has an RSS feed then Drupal has a module that can auto scrape for you.

Let me know if you have more questions. I would encourage to at least join the group to take part in discussions over time.
