Yesterday was pretty normal for the most part. My blood
sugars were doing fair and my activity was normal.
Yesterday afternoon we decided to take my daughter ice skating since the
weather was nice (45 F). I have ice skated before, my wife hasn't, so I was
excited to show my daughter the ice.
About 15 minutes into ice skating I started to feel low but thought nothing of
it. I was cold, moving at a snails pace holding up my daughter, and feet
hurting a bit. I thought my senses might have been off. So we went around a few
more times.
Once I got off the ice I knew something wasn't right. I had a hard time keep my
ankles strait and talking was difficult; a bad sign for a type 1 diabetic. Once
I started pulling my skates off I know I was in bad shape. I didn't have much strength
and my legs were really heavy. Some of the heaviness might be due to skating
though...
Unfortunately the ice rink had already closed their room to the coke machines.
But a coke at this point would not help as much as juice. There was a Panera
Bread about 1 block away. Due to our congested city (Wabash landing area) you have to park in a parking lot some distance off to get to a
business. Yesterday was busy so we ended up parking quite a distance off.
I headed toward Panera Bread on foot and started getting the ghost effect. That
is what I call it at least. When my blood sugar gets low enough I can't feel
myself walking, I feel like I am floating. This has only happened a few times
and my blood sugar was in the upper 20's. I didn't have my blood glucose meter
on me so I had to assume I was in bad shape. That is when I began praying that
my Creator would sustain me until I get some sugar in me.
Finally at Panera Bread I did get a cup of orange juice, 16 ounces, which had
60 grams of carbs roughly. I drank that in about 2 minutes and 5 minutes later
I was fine.
Moments like this scare me and I know one day I will pass out, I just hope
someone nearby will know what to do and get help for me. Unfortunately, this is
pretty normal, ups and downs, with type 1 diabetes. For the time being, I guess
I have avoided another diabetic coma. Thankfully I had some angels surrounding me
to keep me afloat :) while racing to Panera Bread.
