I am glad there is a Tax Day Tea Party in Lafayette tomorrow (12 - 2pm & 6 - 8pm). The party will take place at the pedestrian bridge, adjacent to the Main Street bridge that join West Lafayette and Lafayette.
Like others I am deeply concerned about the direction this country is heading. I am simply going to take part in this event to express my concern. Like most I also hate paying taxes but I know they have to be paid for our country to continue being a great country – the shining light on the hill, that President Obama often speaks of.
At the same time, I believe modifying our tax policies during the economic problem could greatly curve the rebound more sharply. So tomorrow I will be talking up the Fair Tax plan and handing out flyers. I am sure there are lots of people who have never heard of the Fair Tax plan. This plan is not to be confused with the Flat Tax plan.
Either plan would be beneficial to citizens and government. But much debate swarms the Fair Tax plan due to no country implementing it yet (that I know of). Economists like to sit around the table and play “what if” when they all know the plan is better than what we currently have.
I found a fair assessment of the Fair Tax vs Flat tax, I found this comparison to be very resourceful and educational. I also want to point out the Fair Tax calculator, which tells you how much more “purchasing power” you have with the plan.
There are several reasons why I support the Fair Tax plan:
- It is based off consumption, rich, poor, illegal or tourist, we all pay the same rate.
- If you are in a specific income bracket and family size of x, you get a fair tax prebate to offset the consumption tax you will pay the following month
- No more filing taxes
- No more taxes held from my paycheck. If my gross is $1000 then the government doesn’t take anything out, leaving me $1000 net.
- Rewards frugalness and reminds us to not spend wastefully
If you take a look you will see several grass roots movements taking place throughout the country. Citizens are stepping out of their shells and not relying on our elected officials alone to be our voice. I believe this is a signal and the state and federal governments should take time to listen.
During high school we had to memorize the Preamble. I saw no value in it at the time but I am very grateful I was forced to do it. I leave you with it now.
